helvetica

i don’t want to come across clueless about design, but until recently the word ‘helvetica’ mean’t nothing to me…
that was until i came across this film… ‘helvetica’ a documentary about quite simply the font
i quite naively said at the beginning that i thought that the font looked like arial!! ha ha little did i know that arial is designed to be Microsoft’s close copy of helvetica…
well i guess your asking how on earth can a whole film just be about one font, let alone font’s alone!
but it has quite honestly opened my eyes to a whole different perspective on design and the meaning of design… right down to the fonts we choose!
i think that i may have been quite brainwashed by this font, by its commercial use in companies such as jeep, american apparel, gap, evian, american airlines…the list goes on…it gives an air of simplicity but at the same time its message is beyond being simple…i’l let you read into that what you will…
the film opens up the contradiction between the modernist font helvetica and the post modernist grunge fonts (where quite literally anything can become a font, see example below)…
i have decided that i am a post-modernist at heart…where do your thoughts lye?
if this has left you a little confused, I encourage you to watch the film…make your decision ‘to helvetcia or not to helvetica??’
